While Cape Town is renowned for its breath-taking beaches and warm summer days, the winter months in the city are equally as awe-inspiring. With June, the official start of winter, usually being the wettest month of the year, Cape Town winters are often fondly compared to British summers. However, in light of the Cape’s current unusual weather patterns, the combination of radiant sunshine and somewhat cooler temperatures offers an excellent off-peak opportunity to explore the city and its many attractions.
If visiting Cape Town during the winter months is on the cards, we’ve put together a few things to consider when planning your trip:
- Milder weather: Although the average temperature falls between 7 and 20 degrees Celsius in winter, it is not uncommon to experience a solid week of warmer weather, with temperatures reaching 26 degrees Celsius. Snow only falls in areas outside of the city, mostly in areas of higher altitude, such as atop the mountains in Ceres, which makes for a fun daytrip.
- Reduced prices: Airline and accommodation prices are typically lower during the off season of winter, which makes it a great time to travel if you are on a budget. Prices of tours and other activities, including the Table Mountain Cable Car, are also reduced, with many other attractions offering discounts and packages during the winter months. Even better for all the foodies out there, most of Cape Town’s top restaurants offer great winter specials and warn roaring fireplaces that add more to the cosy winter atmosphere.
- Activities and attractions: As weather conditions aren’t too extreme in Cape Town, the city still offers plenty to do and see. For the outdoorsy travellers, winter hikes are extremely beautiful with most of the mountains and forests turning green after a bit of rain. Scuba diving is also an excellent option as there is good visibility beneath the water. Other activities include wine tasting, scenic drives, fishing, boat cruises, theatre and plenty more. For those looking for a little R&R, why not indulge your senses at the Cayenne Spa?
Cape Town is a city that has so much to offer all year round – and to locals, the winter months in the Cape are often regarded as the “secret season”, full of magical wonder at every turn.
