In light of World AIDS Day, celebrated annually on the 1st December 2014, the staff at Pepperclub Hotel & Spa were delighted at the opportunity to assist the team at the Haven Night Shelter as they educated individuals living on the streets on the growth of the disease and the infectious lung disease, Tuberculosis (TB), during their HIV & TB Awareness and Testing Session, held in Cape Town on Tuesday, 9 December 2014.
A welfare organisation located in Green Point, the Haven Night Shelter provides temporary shelter, physical care, social welfare and family re-unification services to homeless adults in the Cape Town Metropole area.
According to Jerry Louw, Manager at the Haven Night Shelter, the aim of the HIV & TB Awareness and Testing Session is to provide clients at the shelter with free testing and counselling on both the diseases. “We have experienced firsthand how HIV and TB impact the lives of many of those living on the streets.
“Our team has therefore created this session to enable our clients to know their TB and HIV health status, as well as inform clients on the recent statistics and infection rate of both diseases.”
The session also aims to provide clients with information on the precautionary measures to follow in order to ensure they do not get infected with HIV and TB. “Continuous education is vital to decrease the spread of further infections” comments Louw.
As a partner of the shelter, Pepperclub Hotel & Spa took the opportunity to assist the team at the shelter with the event. Staff from the hotel provided a wholesome lunch and beverages to clients attending the awareness and testing session. Matthew Cornall, General Manager of Pepperclub Hotel & Spa says that sessions, such as these, are needed in order to equip individuals living on the streets with the necessary knowledge to combat these illnesses.
“Our team is thankful to be a partner of the Haven Night Shelter and to have played a part in the session.”
